every pair of spds iv run have been sound performance, and even if you go for time or crank bros pedals they shouldn't be that much more, like 50/60 quid.yeah,id just try a bunch out, ya mite even find the efficiancy of clipless good for down hilling. i ran flats for a couple of years, and there great for learning skills on but when it comes to efficiancy and speed, imo, clipless is the way to go

in the uk here you can get some shimano spds and a decent pair of shimano shoes for around 100 pounds, thats about 200 dolars. the difference between a 40 pound pair of spds and a 70 pound pair is hardly noticable unless you have a carbon superlight xc bike. have a look on chain reaction cycles.
